Bacteria clump together in the mouth, form colonies, then break down proteins for energy, and finally release smell compounds we recognise as bad breath. The whole model takes approximately 12 hours. So like the rolling stone in the proverb, if you removed the bacteria colonies every 12 hours the smells would not occur.
This model is not specific for the mouth, we know that if we do not shower every day or more frequently (depending on exercise and surroundings) then our underarms will smell.
BreezeCare Breath Clinic has been treating patients with breath issues since 1995, and we can say that 95% of breath issues come from the inability to clean these bacteria colonies away. And most of the other 5% of people have some form of gum disease. Breath issues DO NOT come from the stomach, and mostly come from the mouth, the sinuses and the throat.
No mouthwash alone will work. That is because the bacteria colonies form a protective barrier over themselves called a "biofilm", that stops chemicals from penetrating. Also store mouthwash has harsh disinfectants in them. These disinfectants can end up causing problems. but that is another story.
You need to clean the bacteria colonies and biofilms away every 12 hours (this can only be done with manual cleaning using a cleaning agent, toothbrush and tongue cleaner). And then use specific oxygenating mouthwash to change the environment in your mouth. The more oxygen you pump into your mouth the less anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that live without oxygen) will occupy the mouth space. It is anaerobic bacteria that break proteins down and cause bads breath.
At our Breezecare Clinic we see a lot of patients that have mucous collection in their throats. Brushing, tongue cleaning, flossing and rinsing are recommended not only to optimise your oral hygiene. They are essential in your defence against CoVid-19. The mouth is one of the largest portals the virus can enter into your body. So it makes sense to keep it as clean as possible. The use of non foaming toothpaste will allow you to clean better and longer.
The eyes, nose and mouth, all are entry portals for the new coronavirus and many other germs. Wash your hands and face well with soap and warm water, including — on a finger — a quarter-inch into each nostril. Then gently blow your nose. DON’T use those irrigating devices, like neti pots, that might force viruses further inside! Soap helps lift germs from the surface of the skin, but it’s the scrubbing that gets germs off hands. Hand sanitiser is a good alternative, but it must have at least 60 percent alcohol to be effective.
Everyone knows hand sanitiser is essential. Unfortunately the supermarket shelves are empty. So here is a quick recipe to make your own. In a bowl add 2/3rds of a cup rubbing alcohol (99.9% isopropyl alcohol). Add to this 1/3rd cup of aloe vera gel. Stir this all together and then decant into a soap or pump bottle. Give it a good shake and Voila!! you have your own hand sanitiser.
CoVid-19 can be spread in tiny droplets released from the nose and mouth of an infected person as they cough. A single cough can produce up to 3,000 droplets. These particles can land on other people, clothing and surfaces around them, but some of the smaller particles can remain in the air. There is also some evidence that the virus is also shed for longer in faecal matter, so anyone not washing their hands thoroughly after visiting the toilet could contaminate anything they touch.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, touching a surface or object with the virus and then touching one's own face is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. Even so, the CDC, the World Health Organization and others health authorities, have emphasised that both washing one's hands and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces daily are key in preventing CoVid-19 spread.

Clinical trials and laboratory studies from around the world have shown that GC Tooth Mousse Plus® (TMP) is effective in protecting teeth from tooth decay and erosion, buffering dental plaque pH, remineralising white spot lesions and reducing dentine hypersensitivity. However, no other study has assessed the experiences of oral health, before, during and after individuals becoming regular users of TMP. The aim of this study was to identify how participants’ oral health status changed after introducing TMP into their oral hygiene routine.
Methods
A qualitative study using Charmaz’s grounded theory methodology was conducted. Fifteen purposively sampled regular users of TMP were interviewed. Transcripts were analysed after each interview. Data analysis consisted of transcript coding, detailed memo writing, and data interpretation.
Results
Participants described their experiences of oral health and disease, before, during and after introducing TMP into their daily oral hygiene routine, together with the historical, biological, financial, psychosocial, and habitual dimensions of their experiences. Before becoming a regular user of TMP, participants described themselves as having a damaged mouth with vulnerable teeth, dry mouth, and sensitivity. Various aspects of participants’ histories were relevant, such as, family history and history of oral disease. Having a damaged mouth with vulnerable teeth, dry mouth and sensitivity was explained by those elements. Despite some initial barriers, once being prescribed TMP by a dental professional, a three-fold process of change was initiated: starting a new oral hygiene routine, persevering daily, and experiencing reinforcing outcomes. This process led to a fundamental lifestyle change. Participants transitioned from having a damaged mouth with vulnerable teeth to having a comfortable mouth with strong teeth; at the same time participants felt empowered by this newly found status of being able to keep their teeth for life. Barriers and facilitators for incorporating TMP on daily oral hygiene routine were also identified.
Conclusions
Participants valued having a comfortable mouth with strong teeth, which did not require repeated restorations. Seeing concrete results in their mouths and experiencing a more comfortable mouth boosted adherence to daily applications of TMP, which was maintained over time.
]]>Sit still and spit into a small cup for 1 minute. This is called "resting saliva". You should make at least a quarter of a ml in that minute. Then chew on a rubber band for another minute and collect that saliva. This is called "functional saliva". Compare the two saliva amounts. Your functional saliva (second amount) should be at least four times your resting saliva.
If you are producing sufficient saliva, then it is important to protect the saliva glands from getting worse. You need to pay attention to your lifestyle choices, and also we would recommend adding an antioxidant called EGCG to your diet. This antioxidant has been shown in studies to protect and help stimulate saliva glands. More on this a bit later.....

A lot of medications will affect saliva volumes. In fact most of the main prescription groups affect it. (Blood Pressure, Allergy medicine, Anxiety Medication etc). In fact a study in 2002 showed that a person aged over 50yrs has a 50% increase risk of dry mouth due to medicines.

DryGuard & MighTeaFlow Chewing Gum. This is a chewing gum developed by Dr Stephen Hsu at Georgia Regents University in USA. This gum contains Green Tea and the antioxidants needed for good saliva health. In fact Dr Hsu holds the patent to manufacturing this gum. It is different to just chewing gum, and in our opinion there is no substitute for it. It is sold as a box of 40pieces and you would chew anything from 3 or 4 pieces a day after every meal or any event that has stressed the saliva gland function (exercise, coffee, alcohol, medication, smoking etc).

There is an extra step you can do if you do not make enough saliva. Of course you still need to implement all the lifestyle avoidance steps given above. And you need to be way more strict. Lack of saliva can quickly and significantly damage your teeth and gums (within 6months in some cases).
c): GC Dry Mouth Gel. This gel is a clear neutral pH gel that provides oral comfort and lubrication to the mouth. It also helps to stimulate saliva. GC Dry Mouth Gel can form a protective coating on the gums and cheeks providing up to 4 hours of relief from dry mouth. It is recommended to apply the Dry Mouth Gel at night before sleep.
Important information. Please avoid all commercial mouthwash, even if they are for dry mouth, as most contain acid and will increase tooth sensitivity and cause long term issues. Repeat the test often. As using the DryGuard Gum with EGCG has been shown to significantly help saliva volume over time. In fact one study showed a 400% increase in saliva flow.
